Fundamentals
To be a successful superintendent, you have to combine a multitude of various skills in order to run the operation. Understanding there is more to the job than growing grass is something I embrace and work hard to consistently excel in all aspects of my responsibilities. Some key fundamentals that I posess are highlighted below.
Agronomic Programs
Over the course of my career I have gained extensive knowledge in various agronomic practices for golf courses. Through education and my own execution, I have developed a set of programs that are capable of consistently delivering firm, fast and green conditions. These sound agronomics are a combination of shade mitigation, soil conditioning and nutrient inputs, particularly through nutrient testing to build a program from tissue samples. While much of our industry is science-based, there is still very much an “art” required for providing a world-class course daily. I possess the talent to balance the science and art few peers can match.
Event Management
While daily course work is vital to a successful operation, it is also of great importance to be able to deliver a championship course setup for special events at any club. Over the course of my career I have assisted in preparing courses for all levels of events -- experience that has provided me the skills required to meet the needs of my club when their big tournaments come along each season.

Attention to Detail
Every detail matters – no matter how small it is. The golf experience at a premier facility should be comprehensive. In addition to superb playability, the course should be aesthetically pleasing around every corner. I have a strong dedication to monitoring and caring for all details on property, from perfectly square tees to properly trimmed sprinklers to tree plans. It’s also key to understand the nuance and detail of the original design of the course, using this as a way to enhance master planning and tree management.
Leadership
Teaching is as much a part of my job as managing turf. I developed a unique standard operating procedure for my staff that is built around a team atmosphere and pride in our club. I also advocate for the future of the golf industry through a progressive internship program that not only promotes golf, but is a valuable resource for growing a talent-base for club employees. Communication is also very important to my success as a Superintendent. From course happenings to staff meetings, communication is critical to create pleased golfers and members, which is always the end-result I strive for in my career.
